Miller streamlines its process to ensure projects are completed via a single source.
The upper Midwest market may be the most geographically diverse in the country, but for Miller Architects & Builders, the consistency of superior performance, along with shared resources has brought generations of regional success.
“The key is that we emphasize our single source processes and provide resources based on our client’s needs,” CEO Dan Miller says. “It is a personal process for each client and project, assisting them with development, financial sourcing, architectural design and construction services.”
Those client needs are spread across the Midwest: Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin. For more than five generations, Miller Architects & Builders has collaborated with partners on commercial design/build projects. The company was established by a German immigrant, a carpenter who developed systems for straightening and rebuilding barns throughout Minnesota and the Dakotas in the late 1800s. By 1923, the family business had expanded into single-family home construction and remodeling. A few decades later, commercial and industrial construction, along with architectural design capabilities were added to the mix of services available through Miller.
“No matter what our size or the era, we pride ourselves on our repeat business,” Miller says. “Those opportunities are because we are very relationship oriented.”
Those relationships extend across several sectors, including: hospitality, senior healthcare, multifamily, worship and funeral homes.
“We have focused our work in market sectors and geographic regions that are reasonable for us to service with our suppliers, subcontractors and field staff,” Miller says. “Our strategy is different for each market, but what we can provide is the same high level of customer satisfaction by consistently delivering the highest quality design and construction services. We have clients from the East Coast to Seattle.”
The Miller Architects & Builders experience starts with its development services— from strategic planning, site selection, architectural services, zoning and regulatory compliance to construction management. The development process also includes needs assessment, financing and funding sources or programs, site analysis or site procurement and feasibility analysis.
“Our creativity, practicality and attention to detail highlight our design services,” Miller says. “Our clients reap the benefits of our creative, yet practical solutions to their building and project requirements. We offer full service design, master planning, project administration and follow-up.”
The company offers flexibility with its construction services, whether it is new construction, remodeling or renovation work.
“We approach each and every project in a collaborative, innovative and forward-thinking mindset to ensure our clients are repeat clients,” Miller says.
Miller and his firm utilize local labor to minimize costs while providing a project manager and on-site superintendent to ensure project quality and scheduling are met. It also implements open book competitive bidding and provides value engineering analysis and recommendations.
“What sets us apart is our seasoned staff of project managers and superintendents, who average more than 15 years of experience in the construction industry, most of which is with the Miller organization,” Miller says. “We believe strongly in growing our staff from within by starting in the field as carpenters, moving up to superintendent and eventual project manager positions.”
It is through this internal training system that the company can assure the quality of its staff and projects.
The quality of the company’s work can be seen in a variety of projects, including Eagle Crest apartment homes in Williston, N.D., and MainStay Suites in Tioga, N.D., along with three additional hotels in Williston including the 80-unit Candlewood Suites, 70-unit HomStay Suites and 88-unit Holiday Inn Express. Additionally, in Grand Forks, N.D., the company is building the 252-unit Cardinal Point Apartment homes.
“One of our primary markets is North Dakota, with the increased demand for design and construction services we have refocused resources in that area,” Miller says. “The work we are doing there is representative of what we are capable of doing anywhere and we have many more projects in the pipeline.
“In all projects we craft solutions that are consistent with our client expectations, taste and budget,” Miller adds. “We do this in an interactive, participatory environment, providing ample opportunity for development, input and refinement.”
Because of the wide variety of sectors it serves, Miller makes sure that his firm has deep professional alliances, from the Central Minnesota Builders Association to the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association and the Wisconsin Healthcare Association.
Along with its responsibility to clients, the company has a deep commitment to its community.
“Giving back to the community is a core Miller value, and it is one we encourage in each and every employee,” Miller says. “Having a team that is experienced with integrity and values is a benefit to our clients and our community.”
