Crafting unique home designs that reflect a variety of lifestyles while avoiding challenges before they arise.
After receiving a degree in Elementary Education in 2002, Nathan Porter, owner and operator of Porter Homes, began working in the construction industry in Telluride, Colo. It was there that Porter learned he had a great passion and talent for the industry.
“I went back to Grand Junction and started up a handyman fix-anything- you-need kind of business and built fences, laid tile and serviced anything that I could get my hands on,” Porter says. “Then, after a couple years of doing that, I started buying fix and flip homes.”
After successfully completing 20 homes, Porter decided to start in new construction and purchased several lots. In 2007, Porter started Porter Homes in Grand Junction, Colo. Today, the business is growing steadily with more than 80 homes built since its opening. It is a full-service builder that offers custom homes with interior design assistance in the Grand Junction and Mesa county areas of Colorado. Home prices range between $300,000 to more than $1 million.
“We [offer] pretty much any home style that someone would like to build,” Porter says. “We’re not type casted with a certain type of ranch or two-story. We build southwestern style, modern industrial, contemporary and traditional. We’re really not bound by any particular style of home. If the architect or draftsman can draw the plan, we can build it.”
Currently, Porter Homes is working on a modern industrial style home with a phenomenal view of the Colorado National Monument. The home is full custom design build and is higher-end. The company is also working on homes located on a golf course with prices ranging from $430,000 to $490,000.
“They’re custom homes that sit right on the 10th fairway and 10th green and they have forever unobstructed views of the Colorado National Monument and the Grand Mesa,” Porter says. “It’s just an unbelievable spot. We bought those lots four months ago and we’re starting to build our third home right now.”
Porter says the company has built a few homes with very interesting details inside the homes, including a barrel slide, a basketball court and a climbing wall.
“I personally built a custom barrel slide that went from the pantry to the downstairs playroom,” he says. “It curved around at a 90-degree turn and it was also a barrel slide made of solid wood. Another project that I’ve recently completed which was fun is we built a house with a basketball court inside and a climbing wall on the end of it.”
Clients have been very pleased with the construction and design of their homes. On the company’s website, Logan and Carol M. said they were extremely pleased with their new home and the building process.
“Nate took the time to fully understand our vision and had our sketches converted into the perfect floor plan for our family,” they said. “He paid great attention to details—positioning the home and windows to maximize our views, optimizing traffic flow through the home, and identifying features to accommodate our children and pets. With numerous reviews such as this, Porter Homes has been featured in the annual Parade of Homes home show for several years, which highlights local builders and brings traffic of 2,000 to 4,000 people each year.
“You can showcase some of the new items that are on the market [such as] plumbing and electrical, new countertops, tile ideas and things like that,” Porter says.
The company also has been on the Home Builders Association board of directors for five years and acted as the president of the association for two years. It is also involved with several volunteer projects with the Salvation Army as well as with local church groups.
One of the most important trends Porter Homes has adapted is energy efficiency. Porter says the company has become 100 percent certified as an ENERGY STAR Builder. Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s leadership, American consumers, businesses and organizations have made investments in energy efficiency that are transforming the market for efficient products and practices, creating jobs, and stimulating the economy. Now in its 20th year, the ENERGY STAR program has boosted the adoption of energy efficient products, practices and services through valuable partnerships, objective measurement tools and consumer education.
“In the last five years, we’ve built more ENERGY STAR rated homes than any other custom home builder in Grand Junction,” Porter says. “We pride ourselves in making sure that we are up to date and are accredited. We’ve done our research and our homework and taken the classes to make sure that we’re staying up to date on the latest and greatest in energy efficiency.”
This passion for staying current allows the company to create unique homes for every individual budget. It wants its clients to enjoy the process leading up to the end result. As for future goals with the company, Porter says he plans to stay active in the industry and continue to build quality homes for years to come.
